Primal Performance Series Olympic 5 Degree Smith Machine

The Primal Performance Series v2.0 Olympic Smith Machine is a commercial smith machine with a 5 degree bar path, a counterbalanced bar and a 250 kg weight capacity, made for gyms, PT studios and athletes who want guided barbell work. It loads with 50 mm Olympic plates, measures 2145 × 989 mm and stands 2316 mm tall.

The counterbalance brings the bar's starting weight down to 5 kg, so beginners can learn squats and presses on it while strong lifters load it up. Ten rack positions and safety spotter supports let people train hard without a spotter.

Who it is for

• Commercial gyms that want a guided barbell station members trust
• PT studios teaching squat, press and lunge patterns with a fixed path
• Strength and conditioning facilities that need a safe way to train heavy without a spotter
• New lifters who need a light 5 kg starting bar

Key features

• 5 degree angled bar path that follows natural movement during squats and presses
• 250 kg weight capacity for heavy loading
• Counterbalanced bar with a 5 kg starting weight so light users can train on it too
• 10 rack positions and safety spotter supports to catch the bar at any height
• Knurled bar on closed bush bearings for grip and a steady, consistent glide
• Six Olympic plate holders built into the frame to keep plates off the floor
• Tested to EN 957 and EN ISO 20957 parts 1, 2 and 4 (plus the BS EN ISO versions)

Muscles worked and exercises

A smith machine locks the bar to a guided track, so users can train squats, presses, rows and lunges with less need to balance the load.

• Primary: quads, glutes, chest and shoulders, depending on the lift
• Secondary: hamstrings, triceps, upper back and core
• Smith squats, split squats and reverse lunges for lower body strength
• Flat, incline and overhead presses with a bench (bench sold separately)
• Safe solo training close to failure, with the spotter supports set just below range
• Beginner technique work thanks to the light counterbalanced bar

Frequently asked questions

How much space does the Smith Machine need?

Primal lists it at 2145 mm by 989 mm, and 2316 mm tall. Allow roughly 600 mm clear on every side so users can load plates and walk in and out, which means a zone of about 3.3 × 2.2 m.

How is it loaded and what can it hold?

You load 50 mm Olympic plates onto the bar (plates not included). It is rated to a 250 kg weight capacity, and the counterbalance means the empty bar starts at 5 kg.

What ceiling height do I need?

The frame is 2316 mm tall, so it technically fits under a 2.4 m ceiling, but with very little to spare for installation and lights. We suggest 2.7 m or more, especially if members will do standing overhead presses.

Is it a 5 degree or 7 degree smith machine?

This listing is the 5 degree model. Primal describes the v2.0 Performance Series Smith Machine as having a 5 degree bar angle.

What warranty does it come with?

Primal Strength states a full commercial use warranty of 5 years on the frame, 3 years on parts, and 1 year on pads, cables, pulleys and wearables, plus 1 year labour.

Do you deliver and install in Australia?

Yes. We ship Australia-wide from our Melbourne warehouse, and most metro deliveries arrive 1 to 7 business days after dispatch. It weighs 266 kg packed in a 2390 × 1250 × 380 mm crate, so check access and note that some regional addresses need a freight quote. Use the Ask about this machine form on this page and we will quote delivery and installation for your site.

Pair the Smith Machine with an adjustable bench and a Primal power rack or functional trainer for a complete strength zone.
